Alcatraz Island
Alcatraz Island is a federal prison located in the middle of the San Francisco Bay. The island served as a lighthouse beginning in 1850, welcoming ships into the Bay. It was soon accompanied by a federal prison, referred to as 'The Rock'. In 1963, the island became a National Recreation Area, which now offers tours.
