The Baltimore Basilica, or the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, was the first Roman Catholic cathedral in the U.S. It was constructed from 1806 to 1821 under the guidance of America's first Bishop, John Carroll. It also consists of a crypt, the resting place for eight of the twelve deceased archbishops of Baltimore.
