The Bunker Hill Monument was the first public obelisk (a tall, narrow monument) in the U.S. It was completed in 1843 to commemorate the Battle of Bunker Hill. The Battle was the first major conflict between the British and Patriot forces in the Revolutionary War in 1775. The monument actually stands on Breed’s Hill where the fighting took place.
