The city was founded in 1796 as a manufacturing center for its proximity to numerous canals and railroads. University Circle is the cultural center of Cleveland. It covers 550 acres and surrounds the Case Western Reserve University. The neighborhood is home to many museums including the Cleveland Museum of Art, which holds more than 40,000 objects in 70 galleries.
