Houston is the largest city in the state of Texas and fourth largest in the U.S. The city was founded in 1836 by brothers Augustus and John Allen. It was later named after General Sam Houston, the commander at the Battle of San Jacinto who occupied the city.

Houston is home to the world's largest medicine and research institutions. Among these are the medical center and the space center. The Texas Medical Center consists of 45 medicine institutions, 13 hospitals and 2 medical schools. NASA's Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center controls all spaceflight activity for the U.S. Both institutions are the strongest facilities in the world.

Houston is a diverse and international city. The museum district houses many cultural exhibits, attracting more than 7 million visitors each year. The Museum of Fine Arts is the first and largest museum in Texas. Houston's theatre district is the one of the only cities with permanent performing art companies. Houston is also the first to have an indoor sports stadium. The Astrodome is nicknamed the 'Eighth Wonder of the World'.
