The Alamo was the first of a chain of missions along the San Antonio River. It was built in 1716 by the Spanish Empire for educational purposes. Years later, it was used as a mission and fortress during the Texas Revolution, most famous for being active in the 1836 Battle of the Alamo. It is now transitioned into a museum and open to the public.
