Additional Company Information :
Mission Prime Stage entertains, educates, and enriches students, educators and theatre-lovers in the discovery of theatre and literature. A resident company of The New Hazlett Theater, Prime Stage produces three adaptations of literature from middle and high school reading lists to stimulate the imaginations, intellects and emotions of audiences who seek entertainment without an R-rating. Founded in 1996, Prime Stage is Southwestern Pennsylvania’s only theatre that focuses on literacy. In its sixteen-year history, it has produced more than 60 shows including 8 world premieres. Along with public performances, its student matinees for middle and high school students draw audiences of over 3,000. History highlights Prime Stage has received national recognition as a source of critically acclaimed, well-produced theatre that appeals to seasoned theatre-lovers, educators, and family audiences. The American Alliance for Theatre and Education recognized Prime Stage as the “Outstanding Children's Theatre Company in the United States” in 2000. In his review of our production of The Elephant Man, Bill O’Driscoll, Arts and Entertainment Editor at City Paper, wrote: “As should be obvious from this production, Prime Stage, although its mission is to create theater for young adults, isn’t children’s theater. In fact, last year’s post was about a solid Prime Staging of The Glass Menagerie, and audiences there are a nice mix of younger folks and post-collegiate types.” Its 2012-2013 season features the U.S. premiere of The Great Gatsby and regional premieres of Fahrenheit 451, and Walk Two Moons, a Newbery Award-winning novel read in middle schools. Special events include a series of readings by national and local authors and “Desserts with the Director” where audiences discuss each show with its director as they enjoy desserts from local restaurants.
